When aging and longevity are being talked about, expect a remark about how life-expectancy has deteriorated through the years. Regardless of culture, religion, tradition or even geographical location, anybody can observe that the chance of enjoying a retirement life at sixty years old is getting slimmer nowadays. Oops, before this leads into the pursuit of the mythical fountain of youth, why not take a look at the six most considered tested-and-proven practices in keeping young and healthy.

  1. Meditation

More than the food a person eats, sparing a considerable amount of time to meditate is very important. Food nourishes the body physically but its spirituality must also be fine-tuned. Meditation keeps a person calm and provides more control of his impulses, reason why more people are getting into Yoga. What your mind can conceive, your body can achieve, they say.

  1. Good Night’s Sleep

The claim of getting an eight-hour sleep is healthy has been proven wrong by the graveyard shift. With the round-the-clock operations in factories, call-centers and other businesses, the need for a good night sleep becomes a luxury. Studies show that keeping awake late at night leads to bloating. Catching up sleep time at day even for more than eight hours still doesn’t make up for a good night sleep.

  1. Eat Fresh Food Daily

Along with the construction of high-rise buildings and condominiums is a need for a convenience store nearby. Fast-food chains in every building also become customary. While there are fresh foods that are available in the market, taking time to prepare them is as expensive as the time lost in an employee’s time card.

Eating fresh foods daily is indispensable. Not only that fast foods miss out on important nutrients that the body needs, they also have lots of free radicals. An apple a day, can still keep a doctor away.

  1. Exercise daily

The good thing with the advancement of technology is that it paved the way to invent a lot of gym equipment necessary to exercise. Nowadays, gyms brag about a lot of programs which provide options in getting a daily dose of exercise either for health or aesthetic reasons. Exercising is not only good to build muscles, develop posture and improve stamina and agility. The more important benefit is on cardio; normal heart beat and blood pressure.

  1. Early to bed and early rise

Apart from getting an eight hour sleep at night, another best practice is to hit the sack as early as 9:00 in the evening and getting off the bed as early as 5:00 in the morning, just before the sun rises. Catching the sunrise is not only good for the mood but also paves the way for the bones to catch the morning sun which is a very good source of Vitamin D. Recent studies also show that exposing the back to sunlight is an effective way to fight depression.

  1. Herbs for better health

More and more people are becoming vegans. While others look at being a vegetarian as an abstinence from eating meat, for vegans, it is more on keeping harmony with nature. But vegan or not, the need to take herbs is very important. Herbs provide a lot of nutrients and vitamins that the body need. Green and leafy vegetables are rich in phyto-chemicals that regenerate damaged cells. It also normalizes blood pressure as it cleans the bloodstreams to allow oxygen to flow freely. No wonder why a lot of herbal companies surfaced in the market, capitalizing on the wonders of herbal medicine.

Studies also show that apart from the above mentioned practices, dental cleaning and keeping oral and dental health is also a key-factor in achieving longer life. Apparently, the dirtiest part of man’s body is the mouth. Undergoing dental cleaning ensures bacteria are eradicated before they breed and spreads to other parts of the body and eventually cause disease.
