Why I gave up everything and became homeless

By Chris Paradox

“The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.
Mark Twain

They say moving home is one of the most stressful things you can do.

I concur.

I’d just moved to my new home in Battersea Park, Central London and I was feeling pretty stressed.

When I say “in Battersea Park” I don’t mean in the area around Battersea Park…I mean literally in Battersea Park..Under a tree, in “The Meadow”, by the tennis courts to be exact.

It was April 12th 2001, when I took all my worldly possessions (a bin liner full of clothes, a bin liner full of books and a sleeping bag) went to live under that tree (for what turned out to be 7 months) and howled at the moon…

“OK Universe, I give up. F*ck it! I’ve decided to be a bum. I really can’t play this game anymore. I’m going to be a loser.

Seriously. I’m going to walk the earth like Caine from Kung Fu, until you show me what I’m supposed to do here.

I have to know my purpose!

Otherwise I just can’t be doing with it anymore.

So I’m gonna live under this tree, sell The Big Issue and be a nobody…until you show me the somebody I’m meant to be.”

What made this decision even more desperate/radical/crazy/stupid than you think, is that only 9 months earlier I was a Managing Director running a Media Buying business with 30 staff, sales of £1,000,000 and earning £70K p.a.

But despite the money and the status and the travel and the P.A. and the car and the expense account, I was exhausted, unimpressed, unengaged and terminally unfulfilled.

I was having a Near Life Experience.

“The best thing about being a Beatle, is finding out at 23 that money doesn’t make you happy.”
George Harrison

So I gave it all up, gave it all away and jumped off the proverbial cliff…all based on my belief in a quote about the importance of purpose by Mark Twain.

Pretty stupid huh?

But under that tree, in that park, selling those Big Issues, I met, started dating and fell deeply in love with My Unstoppable Me.

For the first time in my life, I became intimately familiar with something that exists inside all of us, something I call YourUnstoppable You, basically the part of you, that can do, all the things you, don’t think you can do.

Otherwise known as the Human Spirit.

3 Months later at the ripe old age of 35, having never written a poem before in my life, poetry began pouring out of me like verbal vomit.

12 years later I’ve been blessed to live a far more magical, meaningful, adventurously fulfilling life than I ever dreamed possible when I was a “successful” business executive.

My love affair with My Unstoppable Me  has enabled me to do all of the following things (and much more) that I never dreamed I could do

  1. Make £60/hr selling The Big Issue magazine on the streets of London (I once made the equivalent of £560/hour)
  2. Create, promote & compere a “legendary” London Cabaret show for 4 years
  3. Live the life of a Rock Star Performance Poet, mortgage, rent and bill free in London for 6 years
  4. Complete two 40 day water only fasts
  5. Organise & Compere 17 Cabaret shows while backpacking around India
  6. Lose my leg in an accident and transform it into the best thing that’s ever happened to me, by developing Post Traumatic Growth Syndrome
  7. Use the loss of my leg to develop The Art of Meaning: Make Your Life Matter an online course which is helping over 2300 people to access and activate their Unstoppable selves
  8. Become an Ambassador & Inspiration Engineer-in-residence for a World Class Social Enterprise doing life changing work with learning and physically disabled children & adults
  9. Join a Rainbow Cowboy Horse Caravan Circus and ride across Mexico on horseback for 7 months putting on Circus shows with 30 other people from all over the world

But what has really made the last 12 years so utterly brilliant, is that I’ve been blessed to have helped thousands of people live more magical, meaningful, fulfilling lives of their own.

Well the one thing I knew without a shadow of a doubt, when I crashed and burned and moved into Battersea Park to be a homeless Big Issue selling bum was that…

I’m not special!

As I stood there, selling The Big Issue Magazine on Victoria street, being cussed out, told to “get a job” and occasionally spat at, that much was abundantly clear.

At that point it would be a delusional stretch of the imagination to even consider myself average.

My grasp would have to exceed my reach by light years for me to dream I was merely mediocre.

Let’s not beat around the bush here. My life was an Epic Fail and I was a complete loser.

So if I can access and activate My Unstoppable Me, then trust me…anyone can!

Over the last 12 years I’ve also been fortunate enough to meet and become close friends with dozens of people who are also having love affairs with Their Unstoppable Selves.

These are otherwise ordinary people, who simply insisted on living life on their own terms and making a living doing what they love.

And in the process, became Unstoppable.

What I’ve learned from their experience, as well as 12 years in the Recruitment Industry and another 12 years worth of research, study, practice & self experimentation, is a reliable, empirical way for anyone…THAT MEANS YOU…to access & activate Your Unstoppable Youso that you can quit your unfulfilling job to do satisfying, meaningful work you really love, and still pay the bills.

This blog is the result.

I know for a fact that there are thousands of unstoppable people out there..or at least people who have had periods of unstoppability, before their Yeahbuts regained control.

We’d really love to hear your story, so please leave a comment.

Unstoppably Yours

Chris Paradox yourununstoppableyou

Back in 2002 Chris gave up a £70K p.a. Career in Recruitment Advertising to go and live under a tree in Battersea Park and sell the Big Issue for 7 months.

Mark Twain said “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why” and so Chris gave it all up in a desperate attempt to find his ‘Big Why?’

Chris Paradox will talk about his own journey with Conscious Manifestation and how it relates to the evolution of consciousness on earth and the creation of the type of world we all want to live in.

He’ll be explaining…

  • Why Self Love > Self Esteem
  • Why Your Shadow is killing us
  • Why Loving your enemies is the key
  • How to awaken within the dream
He’ll be describing a simply daily practice for manifesting your very own beautiful world.
