My Experience with Pilates for Pregnancy

So about a month ago I started taking Pilates sessions to help me with strength and flexibility during pregnancy. I’ve experienced a lot of lower back discomfort as the baby grows and weight is gained and someone recommended to me to try Pilates with Kamil Mohammed.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a holistic exercise system designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance; so much more than just building a ‘strong core’ or ‘perfect posture’. Exercises involve the whole body and are performed on a mat or a range of specialised equipment.

Regardless of age, ability or fitness level, Pilates is beneficial for everyone.

20150728_141603Regular practitioners of Pilates feel a heightened sense of awareness and ease in their bodies; experiencing less pain and increased mobility. It is this approach that distinguishes Pilates from other forms of exercise. Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and General Practitioners recommend Pilates as one of the most effective forms of exercise today.

Kamil, who is based at Triyoga in Camden, London is trained to give Pilates sessions whilst you’re pregnant – Its important to find someone who is trained in this area if you are pregnant because there are certain things you should avoid doing whilst pregnant.

The first session was for Kamil to assess me, my ability in strength and fitness, and from there he knew what to do with me.

It was completely different to what I thought it was going to be like. I had done 1 Pilates session in the past, this was on the mats, using the body only. With Kamil I was going to be using a whole host of methods including machines.

We started off using one of the large gym balls to do stretches and pelvic floor work. The stretches are amazing because all the tension from carrying extra weight causes a lot of muscles to be tense was finally starting to relax. Yey!

I could see I was going to love Pilates..

Kamil introduced some small weights to work my arms – strength I am going to need when the baby is born. We also did some leg work which was great because I’ll need that too. The baby is starting to get heavy!

We then did some great stuff on the machines, which I really enjoyed. This was a mixture of strength, flexibility and stretching. I loved it! The session was really gentle compared to other training I have done in the past so it really helped me slow down instead of being 50 miles an hour all the time, but its so important to adopt a slower pace in pregnancy!

Kamil was definitely a great choice in instructor, he was very through in his explanations of what we were doing and the benefits of why we were doing it. I felt like I learned a lot of about the body and how my posture might be and also the breathing too.

I’m now a month into the sessions and am feeling great everytime I go. I can’t recommend Kamil it enough and Triyoga is such a great place to hang out for a herbal tea after your session. It’s a very calming and relaxing environment. I’m looking forward to sharing more about my journey with pilates in my pregnancy with you.
